Hawkesworth: Paintings & Works on Paper

Timothy
Hawkesworth has received considerable critical attention
over the last 25 years. His work encapsulates the essence
of art as communication, particularly beyond the limitations
of habitual speech patterns. Hawkesworth's paintings and
drawings tap into the experience of being human -- with
all of the trials of existing naturally within a social
context. Using his many years of figurative painting as
a point of departure, the Irish-born artist creates a
visceral map of a single image that is reminiscent of
the boundless energy of his native country's lush landscapes.
But representational art is not lost in the midst of Hawkesworth's
abstractionist action painting. It is only made more real
by the expression of the internal energy that encompasses
the subject's outward appearance. In both the artist's
large, expansive paintings and smaller works on paper,
there is a sense of urgency and erratically charged presence
that requires the viewer to wonder if the representation
is purer by virtue of it appearing to be of a primal instinct
and stream of consciousness. Hawkesworth's art captures
the human dilemma of existing physically and emotionally.
No wonder this Haverford, PA, artist can be found in the
noted collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the
Museum of Fine Arts Boston. -- Marisa Mariscotti
